Roll with It!

devotionJust the other day, my 9-year-old came running to me with plans for entering the Lego® Treehouse contest. Since most of his Lego® sets are vehicles, I wondered how he could possibly build a treehouse. I couldn’t imagine tires, axles, windshields, etc. being transformed into a cozy crib high up in a tree. I thought he was about to ask for a treehouse set or pieces that are more ideal for the project. But to my surprise, he rolled with what he had. A few moments later, he came running to me again – but this time, with a well-crafted treehouse in hand.

Then I got to thinking about life and the times I’ve waited for the perfect moment or ideal piece instead of rolling with what I had.

But why? Jesus didn’t wait for an ideal piece to feed 5,000, He rolled with what He had: five barley loaves and two fish from a child. Moses only had an ordinary staff in his hand, but it was used for a great sign. And David didn’t wait for the ideal piece to defeat Goliath, he rolled with what he had: five smooth stones from a brook.

I’m sure I’ve missed great opportunities while waiting for ideal pieces to the puzzle of life. But I’m learning that, in many situations, I have to roll with what I have and trust God to transform it into something miraculous.

Roll with it!

Scripture of the Week:

There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? –John 6:9 (KJV)

Prayer:

God, help me to make the most of what I already have, in Christ Jesus’ name, Amen.
