First-Day Jitters: Devotion

back to schoolToday is the first day of our 2015-2016 school year! And although I’ve put in hours and hours of researching and planning, yesterday I experienced first-day jitters. I felt like a 5-year-old anticipating the first day of kindergarten – both excited and nervous all at once.

But why did I get nervous? I did the work to prepare. Homeschooling is not new to me; I know what to expect.

When I finally plopped down on the sofa to calm my nerves, I realized what was making me nervous: my very own thoughts – thoughts of everything not going as planned, thoughts of interruptions and bumps along the road.

But I also realized that I had gone through almost the whole day without making positive affirmations: We will have a successful school day. With tiny tots and interruptions; it won’t be perfect, but my children will be spiritually and academically enriched.

Reflection of the Week:

It’s normal to have first-day jitters, or any-day jitters for that matter. However, nervousness forms as negative thoughts infiltrate our minds. When we replace those thoughts with God’s promises and positive affirmations, God’s peace will comfort and guide us.

Scriptures of the Week:

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. –Philippians 4:8

Prayer:

God, please saturate my mind with Your incomprehensible peace, in Christ Jesus’ name, Amen.
