Interview with Hollie Schindlbeck

Hollie SchindlbeckAge: 30
Ages of Children: 4 and 3
Location: Missouri

Why and when did you decide to homeschool your children?

My husband and I decided to homeschool before we even had children. He and I come from different backgrounds. He was homeschooled with his 10 other siblings. When I met his family 11 years ago, homeschooling was something I didn’t think was done anymore. I thought everyone went to public school just like myself. Watching his mother over the years and then his sisters once they had children completely convinced me. I loved the flexibility and the ability to teach each child to their need instead of making them all learn the exact same way. I also love that I can add in any subject that interests my children at that time and include aspects of our faith into the curriculum. My husband loved being homeschooled and when I was on board, it was pretty much set in stone that this is what we wanted to do.

What’s your proudest homeschool moment?

My favorite moment happened just before we moved. I was in the living room and I heard my children in the dining room playing school. My 4-year-old daughter was pretending to be the teacher and my son was the student. As I listened, they were reviewing our 10 Commandments chart. I was proud to hear that both my son and daughter could recite the first five commandments by heart!

How has homeschooling benefited your family?

Homeschooling is such a blessing to our family since we are a military family that moves every 3 years. It has given us the ability to make our own schedule and do lots of interesting field trips. We can do school just about anywhere and at any time.

Which Bible verse helps you most with homeschooling? How?

Deuteronomy 6:4-9. This verse reminds me that God is to be first in our lives and that is something I want to pass on to my children. It also teaches me that life is about learning not just a few hours a day in a book or doing a hands-on project. It is my personal responsibility to teach my children in all aspects of life, all day and every day, and to remember they are watching what I do and not just hearing what I say.

Which resources or curricula have been most beneficial to your homeschool?

Homeschooling Torah, Horizons and Sonlight

How do your children feel about being homeschooled?

My children absolutely love being homeschooled! They have such a passion for learning. The first thing I hear from them in the morning is “I want to do school”.
