Count Your Blessings to Cast Away Worry

september devotion

How am I not supposed to worry about tomorrow? Isn’t this whole homeschooling journey about tomorrow – about educating and shaping my kids to be future leaders of tomorrow?

Yes, a huge chunk of homeschooling is about tomorrow. We train our children in the way of the Lord, we educate them in a nurturing environment, all while hoping that our efforts will afford them a better future. So, of course, we all think about tomorrow. And honestly, at some time or another, we all worry about tomorrow. Worry is a heavy load that can fall upon us at any time. All leaders have experienced it. How much more will if fall upon someone who is leading his or her children’s education! From the most laid-back homeschools to the most structured homeschools, every caring parent will deal with worry.

But you must beware of worry. It is not only a hefty load, it is a dangerous load! How can we be upbeat and energized while trudging along with worry? How can we teach our children with an encouraging and gentle spirit while worry is nibbling away at our joy? And how can we live to see tomorrow when worrying about tomorrow is corroding our health?

So what should we to do when this massive weight lands on our shoulders?

Remember today.

Worrying about tomorrow blinds us from seeing the blessing of today. Pause and look around. Thank God for your family, thank Him for the things that you usually take for granted, thank Him for the ability to homeschool. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits (Psalm 103:2).  That’s right, thank Him for all His benefits! Just as the old hymn says:

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings, see what God has done.

You’ll be surprised at how many blessing are surrounding you and keeping you afloat today. You won’t even have time to name them all.

Thanking God for the blessings of today is praise to God. When you praise God, you draw Him in (Psalm 22:3). And where His Spirit dwells, there is liberty – complete freedom from the weight of worry (2 Corinthians 3:17).

Don’t let worry rob you of making the most of today. Sure, plan for tomorrow! But don’t worry about tomorrow. When uncertainty seeps in, seek wisdom from God and seasoned homeschoolers, and praise Him for today. Praise Him…and praise Him some more.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things…
Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
—Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)

Dear God, I thank you for countless blessings upon me, my family, and our homeschool. Cast away worry and saturate me with Your liberating Spirit, in Christ Jesus’ name. Amen
