One Goal Every Homeschooler Should Have for 2017

Devotion for January 2017

The old Chinese proverb is true: Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. This proverb can be applied to homeschooling. Well, in a way it can. Our children definitely need to be given information. But are we only giving them information? Or are we teaching them to seek information themselves? So often, home educators try too hard: we try to teach our children everything; we try to cover every aspect of every textbook and school subject. But aiming to teach our children every component of every school subject will only lead to burnout and frustration. Instead, we should aim to teach them the importance of reading and seeking knowledge.

So as we begin this new year with new resolutions and goals, let’s not forget the one goal every homeschooler should have: to teach our children to seek knowledge. While being seekers of knowledge, they’ll discover their true interests. And as we give them room to explore, we’ll be amazed by how much they’ll learn.

Verse of the Month

The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. -Proverbs 18:15

Dear God, show me how to teach and parent in ways that influence my children to be seekers of knowledge, in Christ Jesus’ name, Amen.

This is such a great goal and one I believe is so important. I’ve been the homeschool mom who tried to do it all and cover it all and it always led to burnout. We currently are in the process of minimizing our homeschool to the basics and focusing on the things the children are most interested in. I found that giving them a good foundation in our faith, reading, writing and math are the most important. From there they can learn anythingJ their hearts desire!

I totally understand your current situation, Jocelin. Trying to do it all comes naturally with wanting the best for your children. It’s good that you are refocusing and moving in a direction that is better for your homeschool. That’s the direction I’m focusing on, too. Have a great 2017!
