5 Must-haves for a Stress-free Homeschool

March 2017 Devotion

Paper and pencils are must-haves for homeschool. But if you want a stress-free homeschool, it’s going to take a lot more than just pulling school supplies out of a desk drawer. In fact, what you’ll have to pull out can’t even be found in a drawer. It’s something you’ll have to pull out of your spirit: mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.

We all need mercy, boatloads of it. Praise God for his richness in mercy! (Ephesians 2:4) Without it, our fate would be eternal damnation.

Displaying mercy while homeschooling is essential. A spirit of mercy can help us remain calm and understanding when a child is having a “bad” day.

And how could we not be merciful when God extends so much mercy to us!

A little bit of kindness goes a long way. And a little bit of kindness can make our children feel valued and appreciated. This could rocket boost their self-esteem.

Remember, it doesn’t have to cost a dime to be kind. Kind words and warm hugs go a very, very long way.

Humility, as it relates to teaching, is letting our children know that we’re not know-it-alls; God alone is all-knowing. Humility makes it easier to confess when we don’t understand a certain topic.

Being humble also allows us to seek knowledge and experience the joys of learning along with our children – without a hint of embarrassment.

Being meek means to lose focus of self and submit to the service of others. When we educate our children with a spirit of meekness, we realize that we are serving our children and we don’t look for recognition, fame, or a pat on the back.

I don’t know how anyone can effectively run a homeschool without it. Patience gives us the calmness to understand our children’s needs. When we display patience, our children become more patient and learning becomes more enjoyable.

Verse of the Month

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;  ─ Colossians 3:12 (KJV)

Merciful Father, help me to be more merciful, kind, meek, humble and patient as I educate my children, in Christ Jesus’ name, Amen.
