The Armor of God for Homeschool Moms and Dads

The 2017-2018 school season is here! Most of us have already stacked up on school supplies and books, and some have even purchased fall gear. We’ve done our best to make sure our children are geared up for the school year. And we’ve done it selflessly – focusing on our children’s needs and forgetting about ourselves. But, home educators, we need gear too! We need to gear up in God’s armor (Ephesians 6: 11-18). Putting on the whole armor of God is the only way we’ll be able to stand. So, let’s take a closer look at each piece of armor and how it can get us through this school year successfully.

The Belt of Truth

Your children are being educated at home while an overwhelming majority of U.S. children attend public schools. Let’s face it, you are doing something different, and some people may think you’re a little weird or…a lotta weird. When you don’t fit the norm, negativity and lies are sure to come your way – some from other people and some from your own head.

Satan is the father of lies, but God cannot lie. God’s Word says that we can do all things through Christ. Yes, this includes homeschooling. Romans 8:37 calls us “more than conquerors” through Him who loves us. We are commanded to train our children in Proverbs 22:6, and Deuteronomy 6:7 commands us to diligently teach them the Word of God. Homeschooling can provide a great opportunity to fulfill these commands.

Don’t believe the lies, believe the One who cannot lie. Keep yourself surrounded with God’s Truth.

The Breastplate of Righteousness

The breastplate covers the heart. When our spiritual breastplate is righteousness – doing what’s right – we keep our spiritual hearts protected. When we do what’s right concerning homeschooling (following laws, providing a quality education), we can feel good about our homeschools and we won’t lose heart.

Feet Prepared with the Gospel of Peace

Wherever we go, our feet are at the forefront. Having our feet prepared with the Gospel of Peace means to have God’s message of peace and grace at the forefront. Many people will have questions when you tell them you are homeschooling. Don’t become defensive; display peace and grace. A conversation which started about homeschooling can end with you sharing the Gospel. Imagine that!

Shield of Faith

Faith erases doubt. Faith is believing that God will keep His promises. He promises to never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Fill your ears with God’s Word concerning homeschooling. Listen to faith-filled homeschool veterans; read books written by Christian home educators. Faith is increased by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17).

The Helmet of Salvation

Our spiritual helmet protects our minds. When we truly believe that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, our minds are guarded from accepting false doctrine. As it relates to homeschooling, the Helmet of Salvation guards us from being persuaded by those who denounce Christ-centered education.

The Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God

The sword is our offensive weapon to defeat the enemy’s attacks. The devil prowls around as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). He won’t pass up your child because he or she is homeschooled or because the first subject you teach is Bible Studies. We must continuously pray and speak God’s Word over our children. When it seems like the devil is winning, keep swinging your sword. The Sword of the Spirit can’t be defeated.

Well, that’s our gear, homeschool moms and dads! Stay geared up at all times and have an amazing school year!
