Interview with Anna Gargarita

Age: 38
Ages of Children: 8 and 1

Why and when did you decide to homeschool your children?

We decided to homeschool mid year of 2016. We decided to give it a try as we were about to embark on major changes in our family life in terms of physical location, financial status, and preparation for an additional member of the family. We realized it is one of the best decisions we have made as a family as we continuously grow together, learn more about one another, and learn more about ourselves in the process.

How has homeschooling changed you?

Homeschooling has made me more patient and made me forget about things that stress us out as mothers. It made me closer to the real reasons we wake up everyday: our kids and our role of bringing them up closer to goodness and kindness.

How has homeschooling benefited your family?

Homeschooling allows us unforgettable moments that we will always cherish in our hearts.

How has your homeschooling approach changed since you began?

I had a very rigid curriculum and schedule when we started. I realized, though, that if we do it that way, I am still doing the same “cookie cutter learning style” that we want to get away from. So now, our homeschooling approach is not perfect but we do pause and listen and give one another breathing spaces every now and again. We have a guide in terms of schedule and curriculum but we try to be more flexible now.

What’s the best homeschooling advice you’ve ever received?

Have fun. Enjoy every moment!

What would you say to someone who may be contemplating homeschooling?

Listen to what your heart is telling you. Take cues from your children. Talk it out with your husband and then talk about it with the whole family.
